HOW TO WAIT WELL

Have you ever noticed that often God is not in a hurry? In the Bible we see a number of examples like the story above, as Abraham and Sarah waited years for a child. Joseph, a young man sold by his own brothers, lived in slavery (and at times, prison) for thirteen years before he rose to a powerful position in Egypt. And Jacob labored for fourteen years before he was released from Laban, the man whom he had to work for in order to earn the right to marry the man’s two daughters. He worked six more years for his flocks.

God doesn’t seem to be in a hurry because He is not on our timetable, we are on His. Often we tend to be more focused on the results, rather than the process of getting there. While we may think nothing is happening in the waiting times God is preparing and positioning us for what is next.

The truth is God is God, and we will never fully know His reasons. But we can take comfort in the fact that He is good, loving, and faithful—and He is always at work, even in the dark, putting together the pieces of our lives for His good purposes.

During seasons of waiting in our lives we learn that:

Waiting is active. Waiting is more than just passing time; it is not doing nothing. The work of waiting is believing God. Not just believing in God, but believing Him. It’s trusting and having faith that the One who delights us in giving will provide what is best for each of us. It’s a proactive time, not a passive one. You will discover in this chapter what you can do as you wait.
